The Netherlands Alumni Network in China (NANC) is an initiative of a group of Holland returned Chinese alumni of Dutch higher education institutions. It is the very first and sole official Dutch alumni network in China representing and promoting Holland Alumni network locally; it is a part of the Netherlands Education Support Office (NESO) CHINA. NANC aims to serve as a platform to provide the means and opportunities for its participants and partners to improve their communication and empowerment, to promote their social and professional interest, and thereby ultimately improve Sino-Dutch relations.
The NANC stakeholders not only include the alumni community itself, but also the Dutch higher education institutions that they attended as well as other parties such as Chinese higher education institutions, the Dutch and the Chinese government departments and organizations as well as companies. The NANC is supported by NESO CHINA, which serves as its Secretariat, and funded by many Dutch highere education institutions and Dutch(interantional) comapnies as annual sponsors.
Since the 1980s and especially since 2001, thousands of Chinese students and researchers have gone to the Netherlands to pursue their studies and to engage in academic research at Dutch institutions and research institutes. The Netherlands has become a popular study destination for the Chinese students.
Increasing numbers of Chinese Holland alumni are returning to China to start or continue their professional careers in business, academic or government circles. While it is widely recognized that institutions and their former students could greatly benefit from maintaining contacts and mutual support, there are hardly any institutional, let alone national structures that support the continuation of interaction and engagement between the Chinese alumni and their institutions.
Due to various reasons, many Dutch universities and institutes do not have well-tacked alumni database, some do not keep consistent communication with their alumni. Under this background, NANC started to serve as a vehicle to link returned Chinese alumni (local Holland alumni community) to their alma-masters in order to allow Dutch institutions to connect their alumni more effectively. More importantly, alumni are important "image ambassador" who can help promote the Dutch education with personal experiences.
NANC is currently funded by 32 Dutch higher education institutions on annual basis.
